NMDA is associated with Neuromatch, Inc. - a 501(c)3 nonprofit in the United States.
The mission of Neuromatch is to make it easier to participate in and contribute to science. We do this by providing inclusive education, conferencing, and scientific communication platforms to scientists around the world. We focus on computational methods as those offer the best worldwide access and participation.
Our algorithmic matching partners scientists with ideal projects, collaborations, and networking groups to create the important networking links that enable scientific research.
We work with this community of 20,000 data scientists and machine learning engineers to find the best match for the research and development projects of our partners.
FAQs
Who employs the people that do research and development in my lab?
We do. We provide them full benefits, regular paychecks, and we handle mentoring, and letters of recommendation when they move on to faculty jobs.
For most institutions, it is best to see us as a service that accomplishes specific needs or tasks in your lab. That is, we are a contractor, not a set of remote employees that you hiring.
Where are you located?
We are an all-remote company. We have no central location. We believe this ‘cloud’ presence represents the best opportunities for both labs and researchers to work with their best match.
That said, we are a business entity registered in the United States. If your funding requires you to work with somebody in the United States, you can use us, even though we work with people from around the world (exceptions apply for certain Defense Contracts).
How do we pay you?
This is flexible and depends what is best for your institution and your sources of funding and which stage of the project you are in.
Some people just contract us directly, paying with flexible University or Lab funds. Others have us as a subrecipient, subawardee, contractor, or vendor on a grant. We can operate in any capacity, and it often depends on the scope of assistance you are looking for.
We can help define which of these would be most beneficial or required for you after learning more about the project.
How do you handle intellectual property?
This also depends on the type of work. Generally everything is yours, but we would encourage you to share authorship of papers with significant contributors from our side to help further their career. Authorship rights will be discussed as we discuss the scope of work so that this is known before we even begin.
We offer a discount on our services to people that elect to allow work products to be open-sourced.
Our Ethical Principles

Academic positions are often fraught with uncertainty. This stems from two factors. First, the limited contracts for postdoctoral researchers don’t allow them any permanence or certainty in their position, causing them to have to move around to the next available contract. Second, this movement and other uncertainty is caused by grant-based funding that can run out due to factors only somewhat in a researcher’s control.
In contrast, NMDA provides stability to these researchers by providing either full time, benefitted positions that allow them to live in one place (due to always remote work) while contributing to research and development or are part time to work alongside existing scholarly commitments.

The gig economy can exploit workers. It does so by taking advantage of specific employment laws to provide workers with pay that is less than it seems, denying benefits when they would normally be advised or required, and creating confusing systems that make it easy for workers to misundertand (or mis-bill) their total compensation.
While NMDA does offer part time, contracted positions in addition to our full time positions, we treat these part time positions correctly as part time employees, verifying that they understand the part time nature and timeline of the work. We work with these employees to understand how this position fits into their career path and why the part time aspect suits their other activities they are participating in.

People do their best work when they are paid and compensated fairly. NMDA ensures this not just for the health and wellbeing of our employees, but also for the best outcomes for our clients and partners.
